The Men's Water Polo World Championship is a representative competition organized by FINA as an integral part of the World Aquatics Championships. The competition was founded in 1973 and from then until 2001 was held at relatively irregular intervals, after which it was held every other year. Serbia has won the most championship titles (5), including the titles won by the national teams of SFRY and Serbia and Montenegro.
In its current format, the competition has 16 teams divided into 4 groups of four teams each. All teams secure a place in the round of 16, and the group stage is played for the best possible starting position in it. From the round of 16 onwards, the classic elimination system will be applied.
Group A will feature Serbia, Romania, Italy and South Africa.
Group B will feature Spain, Australia, Japan and Hungary.
Group C will feature Brazil, Canada, the USA and Singapore.
Group D will also feature Croatia, Montenegro, Greece and China.
Serbia and South Africa will open the championship with tonight's match.
