The French Open (French: Championnats Internationauk de France) or Roland Garros (French: Tournoi de Roland-Garros) is a tennis tournament held in Paris on the last Sunday in May and the first Sunday in June. It is the second Grand Slam tournament in the tennis calendar year.
The tournament was first played in 1891. The new stadium was opened in 1928, named after Roland Garros, a French hero from World War I. The Philippe Chatrier Court was also built on red clay. In 1968, the French Open became the first "open" tournament (open to both amateurs and professionals). Since 2006, prize money has been equal for both men and women.
Roland Garros was the only Grand Slam tournament in which the deciding fifth set was not played in a tiebreak but on a point difference. However, from 2022 onwards, this rule has been changed, so that all four Grand Slams have a super tiebreak in the fifth set at 6:6, which is played to ten points.
Officially called in French les Internationauk de France de Tennis, the tournament itself uses the name Roland Garros in all languages, and in English it is usually called the French Open. (The stadium and tournament are hyphenated as Roland Garros because French spelling rules require that the elements of a name in the name of a place or event named after a person be joined by a hyphen.) In 1891, the French Championships, usually called the French Championships in English, began. This was open only to players who were members of French clubs. The first winner was H. Briggs, a Briton living in Paris and a member of the Stade Francois. He defeated P. Baignères in straight sets in the final. The first women's singles tournament, with four entries, was held in 1897. Mixed doubles was added in 1902, and women's doubles in 1907. In the period 1915–1919. The tournament was not organized due to World War I.
This tournament will feature all the best players in the world, and Novak Đoković will attempt to reach the 25th Grand Slam of his career, but he has an extremely difficult schedule in his part of the draw. The favorite in the men's competition is Carlos Alcaraz (odds 2.20), who is defending the trophy and arrives in Paris full of confidence after winning the Master 1000 tournament in Rome last week. In that final he defeated Janik Siner, who played excellently in the first tournament after the suspension, but in the final he did not have the strength for Alcaraz. Janik Siner is the second favorite (odds 2.85). The third favorite, from the shadows, is Novak Djokovic with odds 13, and the fourth is Alexander Zverev with odds 15. In the women's competition, the most decorated American is Chris-Evert Lloyd with seven trophies, while the defending champion is the Polish Iga Swiontek, who has won three consecutive tournaments here. However, her decline in form in recent months, and the loss of her number one spot in the WTA rankings, has put Aryna Sabalenka, number 1 in the WTA rankings, as the first favorite, with odds 2.60. She is followed by young American Coco Goff with odds of 3.25, then Iga Sviontek with odds of 3.40 and Russian teenager Mira Andreeva with odds of 3.50.
The tournament prize pool is over 56 million euros, which is a new record, and about a million more than last year.
The largest court in this tournament and the venue for the final is Court Philippe Chatrier, with a capacity of 15,000 spectators.
