Teams from all six football confederations are participating: Europe (UEFA), South America (KONMEBOL), Asia (AFC), Africa (CAF), North and Central America (KONCAKAF) and Oceania (OFC). Europe has the most representatives. A total of 12 teams – these are the winners of the previous four seasons of the Champions League (2021-2024) and the best-ranked teams by performance in the Champions League in the aforementioned period, with the note that a maximum of two clubs from one country can participate. More can only be possible if they win multiple continental titles (you will see the case of Brazil in CONMEBOL below).
The winner of this year's edition of the European Champions League is not included in that number of 12 clubs, but Paris Saint-Germain certainly qualified as one of the remaining top-ranked teams.
Europe will be represented at the Club World Cup by Chelsea (England, champion 2021), Real Madrid (Spain, champion 2022 and 2024), Manchester City (England, champion 2023), Bayern Munich (Germany), Paris Saint-Germain (France), Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Inter Milan (Italy), Porto (Portugal), Atletico Madrid (Spain), Benfica (Portugal), Juventus (Italy) and Salzburg (Austria).
Among the 12 best ranked by performance in the Champions League (2021-2024) were also Liverpool, RB Leipzig and Barcelona, but they were not eligible to participate because two clubs from their countries had already qualified. Interestingly, Red Bull Salzburg was only 18th in the Champions League performance rankings, but in addition to the aforementioned Liverpool, RB Leipzig and Barcelona, they also gained an advantage over Napoli (15th), Sevilla (16th) and Milan (17th), because all of these clubs come from countries from which two clubs have already qualified.
The second confederation with the most participants is South America (CONMEBOL) with six clubs. Brazil initially "abolished" the rule of a maximum of two clubs from one country, because in the period from 2001 to 2024, the South American title (Copa Libertadores) was won by four different Brazilian clubs - Palmeiras 2021, Flamengo 2022, Fluminenze 2023 and Botafogo 2024. The remaining two places went to Argentine giants River Plate and Boca Juniors based on the coefficient in the rankings.
Four places each were awarded to clubs from Asia, Africa, and the North and Central American Confederation (CONCACAF), with the United States receiving an additional fifth place as hosts. One place was awarded to Oceania, specifically Auckland City, the 2022, 2023, and 2024 champions.
Asia is represented by Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia, 2021 champions), Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan, 2022 champions), Al Ain (United Arab Emirates, 2023-24 champions), and Ulsan (South Korea, by coefficient). The African teams participating are Al Ahly (Egypt, 2021, 2023, 2024 champions), Wydad (Morocco, 2023 champions), Esperance (Tunisia, by coefficient), and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa, by coefficient).
From North and Central America (CONCACAF), the United States and Mexico each have two clubs. These are Monterrey (Mexico, champion 2021), Seattle Sounders (USA, champion 2022), Pachuca (Mexico, champion 2024) and Los Angeles (USA, play-off).
In fact, there were supposed to be three clubs from Mexico, but the continental champion from 2023, Club Leon, was excluded due to FIFA's rules on multiple club ownership. Namely, Leon and Pachuca have the same owners. At that time, it was decided that a play-off would be held for the remaining fourth place, in which Los Angeles beat Mexican America 2-1 and qualified for the Club World Cup.
Finally, one additional place remained for the tournament host and FIFA decided to give it to Inter Miami, with the explanation that they won the “2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield”.
Of course, the main reason is the intention to have Argentine Leo Messi play in the tournament and thus further popularize the Club World Cup, which has not been of great interest in the past period. Leo Messi will certainly be one of the main stars of the competition, along with numerous football players and coaches from Europe (and Asia). Thus, the most trophy-winning European club Real Madrid will play for the first time at the Club World Cup with new coach Xabi Alonso, and the debut of Trent Alexander-Arnold, a former Liverpool player, will certainly attract attention in this team.
Many will also be interested in how the Champions League finalist Inter Milan will look with a new coach, Romanian Cristian Chiu, while former Nerazzurri strategist Simone Inzaghi will also make his debut in this competition on the bench of Saudi Al Hilal, and in the match against Real Madrid. The clubs are divided into eight groups of four teams each.
Group A: Palmeiras (Brazil), Porto (Portugal), Al Ahly (Egypt) and Inter Miami (USA).
Group B: Paris Saint-Germain (France), Atletico Madrid (Spain), Botafogo (Brazil) and Seattle Sounders (USA).
Group C: Bayern Munich (Germany), Benfica (Portugal), Boca Juniors (Argentina) and Auckland City (New Zealand).
Group D: Flamengo (Brazil), Chelsea (England), Los Angeles (USA), Esperance (Tunisia).
Group E: River Plate (Argentina), Inter Milan (Italy), Monterrey (Mexico), Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan).
Group F: Fluminense (Brazil), Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Ulsan (South Korea), Mamelodi S. (South Africa).
Group G: Manchester City (England), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Juventus (Italy) and Al Ain (UAE).
Group H: Real Madrid (Spain), Al-Hilal (S. Arabia), Salzburg (Austria), Pachuca (Mexico).
The 2025 Club World Cup matches will be held in 11 cities at 12 stadiums.
These are: New Jersey, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando (two stadiums), Philadelphia, Seattle, Washington and Atlanta. Similar to the FIFA World Cup for national teams, the 32 clubs are divided into eight groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage. However, unlike the FIFA World Cup for national teams, there will be no third-place play-off.
The opening and first match will be held on June 14 in Miami, with the final scheduled for July 13 in New Jersey. The total prize pool is over a billion US dollars, or around 900 million euros, which will be divided among 32 clubs.
The clubs will receive a cash prize for their placement, for passing the group and for each subsequent step to the final.
The winner of the tournament will receive a total of around 110 million euros.
The clubs will also receive a participation prize, which depends on various sporting and commercial criteria. European clubs will earn more for participating than clubs from other continents.
From our perspective, the group stage will start with three matches per day, and then move to four matches per day.
