As in the previous season, 36 clubs will compete in the group stage. The eight best teams will directly qualify for the round of 16, while the teams from 9th to 24th place will play two knockout stage matches, and the qualifications will take them to the round of 16. Clubs that finish the league below 24th place will finish the competition in Europe.
This will be the 55th edition of the competition and the 17th since the Europa League was called that (it was previously called the UEFA Cup). The final of this season will be played on 20 May at the Vodafone Park stadium in Istanbul.
Tottenham are defending their title, having narrowly defeated Manchester United in last season's final. Aston Villa are the main favourites to win this season, with odds of around 7. The English team have kept their old squad, but they have played quite poorly at the start of this season and it is hard to imagine them winning the trophy. Behind them with odds of 10 is Roma, and Betis, Porto and Bologna with odds of 11. The least likely team is Maccabi Tel Aviv, with odds of 250, and there are also Sturm Graz and Ferencvaros with odds of 200. Our region will be represented by Crvena zvezda Belgrade and Dinamo Zagreb. The odds for a win against Belgrade are 150, while Dinamo is slightly better, with odds of 81.
Red Star Belgrade began their European competition in the second round of Champions League qualifying. Their opponents were Gibraltar's Lincoln, who were defeated 6-1 on aggregate, and then in the third round of qualifying, Red Star Belgrade faced Polish champions Lech Poznan. After the away win, Red Star Belgrade drew at home, and with an aggregate score of 4-2, they qualified for the play-off round of Champions League qualifying. It was probably, at least on paper, the easiest possible opponent and the most desirable, but Red Star was eliminated by Paphos, and thus qualified directly for the group stage of the Europa League. Red Star's most significant reinforcement this summer is Marko Arnautović. It is from him, then Katai, Ivanić, Radonjić and the others, that good performances in Europe are expected, and they will advance further. Red Star plays at home against Setlik, then Porto, then Braga, then Lille arrives in Belgrade, and after them the Romanian FKSB, and the last game this year will be an away game in Graz against Strum. At the end of January they play an away game against Malmo and the last game in Belgrade against Celta from Vigo. Red Star is on a great way to defend the title in Serbia, and since they have a nice advantage, they can focus on European games, and tomorrow a real spectacle is expected against Celtic.
Dinamo Zagreb finished last season as the second-placed team in the league, which ensured direct participation in the group stage of this year's Europa League. Since they did not have to play any qualifiers, all the focus was on the domestic championship, and this is also visible in the table. After seven rounds played, Dinamo is first with 16 points, three points ahead of Hajduk from Split, and this weekend Hajduk was defeated at Poljud. The Zagreb team is seriously preparing for Europe, and this is supported by the loan that brought Algerian international and former player of Milan and Marseille, from where he came, Ismael Benasser, to Maksimir. Dinamo opens the European season in Zagreb against Fenerbahçe, and then they are supposed to visit Maccabi from Tek Avia in Serbia, and then in Sweden against Malmö. Then Celta Vigo arrives in Zagreb, then Dinamo goes to Lille, then welcomes Betis and Romanian FSCB, and in the last round they visit Midtjylland.
In this article, we have selected four matches for which we will give betting suggestions, two that will be played tomorrow, and two that will be on the program on Thursday.
Crvena zvezda-Celtic
Zvezda dominates the Serbian Super League, and after seven rounds played, it has the maximum with 21 points. This weekend they defeated their eternal rival, and the red and whites are welcoming the Scots with a lot of confidence and will try to achieve a triumph that would mean a lot for the continuation of the European race, and in this they will be helped by the fans, who will fill the Rajko Mitić stadium to the last seat. Celtic qualified for the semi-finals of the League Cup this weekend, where they will play against their biggest rival, Rangers. In the Scottish championship table, they share first place with Hearts, both teams have 13 points. Celtic entered the Europa League after a shocking elimination in the Champions League play-offs against Kairat from Kazakhstan, and given the ongoing war between fans and management, the atmosphere in the club is not great, and Red Star could take advantage of this situation.

Salzburg-Porto
The Austrians started the season by eliminating the Norwegian Brann in the third qualiin the Champions League qualifying round, and then suffered two defeats to Club Brugge in the play-offs, thus reaching the Europa League group stage. After the seventh round, they are in fifth place in the championship with 11 points, 6 less than the current leader. Roses are not blooming in this city and considering that they are visiting former European champions, Porto, they will have to urgently change something. Porto finished third in the championship last season and entered the Europa League group stage directly. The fact that they did not play qualifiers this summer is clearly visible, because after six rounds of the Portuguese league, Porto is the leader with a maximum of 18 points, and only one goal conceded. The Portuguese have high ambitions this season, and they will certainly start strongly from the very start.

Betis-Nottingham Forest
Betis has nine points after six rounds and is currently sixth in the table. The Spaniards are tough at home, and they will have a lot of support from the stands, so we should expect them to control the match, and maybe even justify their role as favorites. And that job will not be easy because the former European champions, Nottingham Forest, are coming to the game. The Summari were a hit last season in England and narrowly missed out on the Champions League. However, they have been playing very poorly this year. They started with a win in the Premier League, but lost three times in the next five games, and were also eliminated from the EFL Cup. However, they come into this match with the hope that they can achieve a positive result.

Nice-Roma
One of the more interesting duels of the first round will be this one. Nice started the season poorly, losing twice to Benfica 2-0 in the Champions League play-offs, and then continued to suffer, winning two and losing three in the first five rounds of French Ligue 1. Roma secured a place in the Europa League group stage last year through the championship, but did not play in the qualifiers. They have three wins and a loss in Serie A, and interestingly, each of their previous four matches ended 1-0. This weekend they beat their arch-rivals, Lazio, so the "wolf" arrives in France full of confidence. The two teams have met once, three years ago, in a friendly match in which the result was 1-1.
