After almost five months of anticipation, the new Euroleague season is upon us. This week we have a double round on the schedule, with the first round matches scheduled for today and tomorrow. Today begins the 26th edition of the highest quality European competition. This season, as many as 20 clubs will compete, which is the most in history. This will also be the first season in which the competition will be called only the Euroleague, without Turkish Airlines, as the sponsorship ended at the end of last season. Dubai, the only club coming from outside Europe, is debuting in this new format. Fenerbahçe enters the new season as the defending champion, but this season they will not be among the three main favorites to win the trophy. The first favorite is Panathinaikos, the second is its eternal rival, Olympiacos, while Real Madrid is in third place.
The increase in the number of clubs and the expansion of the competition brings greater competitiveness - more games, more teams that will strive for victory, but also greater pressure on all teams to be consistent throughout the season. As in previous seasons, Red Star Belgrade and Partizan will compete from our area. The red and whites have changed many players, and the adaptation period is still ongoing and will continue, while the black and whites have strengthened, and kept some players from last season, so they are now a little more experienced. Both teams are hoping for the playoffs, which is somewhat realistic for them to fight for those positions, and we will see if they succeed in doing so.
The Final Four will be played in Athens this season, and is scheduled for May 22-24, 2026.
