A new season of the highest quality European basketball competition is upon us. This will be the 69th edition of the Euroleague, which, like last season, will have 20 teams. Euroleague season 2026/27. will follow this format for the regular season, playoffs, playoffs and Final Four. The regular part of the season is played according to the head-to-head system: each of the 20 teams will play 38 games between Thursday, September 24, 2026 and Friday, April 16, 2027.
The six best-placed teams advance directly to the playoffs, while the seventh-to-tenth-placed teams go to the Play-In Showdown. The Play-In Showdown tournament, now in its fourth year in a row, will be played on Tuesday, April 20, and Friday, April 23, 2027.
The teams that took seventh and eighth place in the regular season meet in one game, and the winner secures a place in the quarterfinal series (on three wins) against the second-placed team from the regular season. The teams from ninth and tenth place also play one game; the defeated team is eliminated, while the winner meets the loser of the duel of the seventh-placed and eighth-placed team to decide who will occupy the last place in the playoffs, that is, fight for a three-game series against the best-placed team from the regular season. The host of each game in the "Play-In Showdown" tournament is the team that took a better position in the regular part of the season. Eight teams participate in the playoffs — the top six from the regular season and the two teams that went through the "Play-In Showdown" — divided into four series that are played on three best-of-five games (the "best of five" system), depending on the position in the standings. The competition starts on Tuesday, April 27, and ends on Wednesday, May 12, 2027 at the latest. In each series, the higher-ranked team hosts the first and second games, as well as the fifth, if the series is extended to the maximum.
The winners of the series advance to the final tournament "Final Four". The final tournament of Euroleague 2027 will take place during the fifth weekend in May. The semi-final matches are scheduled for Friday 28 May, while the winners of those matches will meet in the final on Sunday 30 May to decide the champion for the 2026/27 season.
As for the favorites, the Athenian rivals dominate. The defending champions, Olympiakos, and Panathinaikos are the main favorites to win the cup. Then follow Fenerbahce and Real Madrid and then everyone else. Like every season, there will certainly be some surprises during the competition, and a large number of clubs want play-offs, so it remains to be seen who has the capacity for the first six places.
